Maine Ghost
by Denise

We moved to the house in which I currently reside when I was seven (1997). It is a pretty old two-story, built sometime during the Civil War era, and is located in an old port town right on a river in Maine. Since we have moved here, some very distinct paranormal behavior has been noticed by its inhabitants (humans and animals). Unfortunately for an aspiring young paranormal investigator, I have only experienced the ghosts a few times. My mother seems to be the subject with whom the ghosts are attracted, and none of my experiences even come close to being interesting when compared to my mothers.

My mother has experienced many different supernatural events, such as having her name called out by an adult male and female voice (my father being asleep beside her) at the end of her bed, inexplicable music in the night after people are asleep, footsteps pacing the upstairs hallway, and the faucet turning on by itself in the bathroom. Until this year, I have considered her to be a borderline skeptic, but recent events have convinced me that her opinions have changed.

The first experience she said that really affected her happened sometime in December, 2007, when she was downstairs and heard a big thunk upstairs in the bathroom. She went upstairs to look, and there was a big snail-shaped decanter of oil that one of us had given to her when we were children laying on the middle of the floor. Now, this snail was in the middle of a big shelf surrounded by seashells, and none of the surrounding objects were touched. This shelf was also in a place where the cats would have a very hard time getting to it, and the cats were not in the closed bathroom when she went up. Secondly, the glass decanter could have easily broken if it had, in fact, fallen mysteriously from the middle of an assortment of breakable seashells.

This was only the beginning of such encounters, and by far the least daunting. Early in February of this year, my mom was in the bathroom. She was alone in the house, and all of a sudden, right outside of the bathroom in the upstairs hallway she heard the pacing of heavy feet that she had heard before only when she was downstairs. She said that she was a little scared, and waited until they were done to exit the bathroom.

The most exciting thing that she told me, though, happened a few weeks ago in mid-March. She was home alone, as she usually is when she experiences these entities. She was sitting downstairs in an armchair that is in the corner of the living room right by the doorway to the hall to the kitchen. This chair has a clear view of the staircase upstairs, and most of the downstairs hallway that leads to the kitchen. My mom was reading a book when she said that she caught something out of the corner of her eye that made her look up. Walking down the hall, at a normal pace she said, was a woman. She described her as looking to be in her early thirties, and she was wearing Civil War era clothing, typical of the Maine environment, a flannel dress with some sort of apron. The interesting thing about this woman, however, is that she saw her in a gray-white sort of color, and my mom said that she could neither describe her as three dimensional nor any other dimension, merely that she was not composed in the same way as either humans or pictures on the television.

Despite all of these entities, my mom says that she does not ever get a threatening feeling from any of them. She thinks, in fact, that they may be some of protection as they appear when there is only one person around or awake.
